Alaska: notifying the DMV after you sell

Alaska requires you to tell the Alaska DMV when you sell your car. Filing protects you from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.

At a glance

  • Required? Yes, by law
  • Deadline: Within 10 days of the sale
  • Form: Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer (the detachable stub on your Alaska title)
  • Where to file: Online, by mail, or at a DMV office

How to file

  1. Fill out the Notice of Vehicle Sale stub at the bottom of your title, or use the online report on the Alaska DMV site.
  2. List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
  3. Mail it, drop it off at a DMV office, or submit it online. Save a copy.

Your license plates

  • Standard Alaska plates stay with the car. Leave them on.
  • Personalized or specialty plates are yours to keep. Remove them before pickup.

Keep for your records

  • Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
  • A copy of the signed title
  • Your Bill of Sale
