Colorado: notifying the DMV after you sell
Colorado doesn't require it, but telling the Colorado DMV about your sale is the best way to protect yourself from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.
At a glance
- Required? Recommended, not required
- Deadline: Within 5 days of the sale
- Form: Report Release of Liability (online)
- Where to file: Online at mydmv.colorado.gov, or at a county motor vehicle office
How to file
- Go to mydmv.colorado.gov and choose Report Release of Liability. You don't need to log in.
- Enter your plate number and the VIN, or the verification code from your registration card.
- Save your confirmation.
Your license plates
- Remove your plates before pickup. In Colorado, plates belong to the owner, not the car.
- Standard green-and-white plates: surrender or destroy them. Personalized, group special or alumni plates can move to your next vehicle.
Keep for your records
- Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
- A copy of the signed title
- Your Bill of Sale
