Delaware: notifying the DMV after you sell

Delaware requires you to tell the Delaware DMV when you sell your car. Filing protects you from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.

At a glance

  • Required? Yes, by law (when you don't complete the transfer together at the DMV, which is the case with Plug)
  • Deadline: No set number of days. File promptly after pickup.
  • Form: Seller's Report of Sale (the detachable section of your Delaware title)
  • Where to file: By mail or email to the Delaware DMV

How to file

  1. Fill out the Seller's Report of Sale section of your Delaware title, or download the printable Report of Sale form.
  2. List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
  3. Mail or email it to the Delaware DMV. Keep a copy.

Your license plates

  • Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
  • Surrender them in person at a Delaware DMV, or ask to put them in tag retention to reuse on your next vehicle.

Keep for your records

  • Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
  • A copy of the signed title
  • Your Bill of Sale
