Illinois: notifying the DMV after you sell

Illinois requires you to tell the Illinois Secretary of State when you sell your car. Filing protects you from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.

At a glance

  • Required? Yes, to release you from liability
  • Deadline: Right away after the sale
  • Form: Seller's Report of Sale (Form VSD 703)
  • Where to file: By mail to the Secretary of State's Vehicle Services Department

How to file

  1. Fill out the notice of sale at the bottom of your Illinois title, or download Form VSD 703.
  2. List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
  3. Mail it to the Secretary of State's Vehicle Services Department right away. Keep a copy.

Your license plates

  • Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
  • Transfer them to another vehicle. They don't stay with the car.

Keep for your records

  • Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
  • A copy of the signed title
  • Your Bill of Sale
