Iowa: notifying the DMV after you sell

Iowa doesn't require it, but telling the Iowa DOT about your sale is the best way to protect yourself from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.

At a glance

  • Required? Optional, but it protects you
  • Deadline: No state deadline
  • Form: Notice of Sale of Vehicle and Delivery of Title (Form 411107)
  • Where to file: Your county treasurer

How to file

  1. Fill out Form 411107.
  2. List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
  3. File it with your county treasurer. Keep a copy.

Your license plates

  • Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
  • Transfer them, or return them to your county treasurer for registration credit.

Keep for your records

  • Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
  • A copy of the signed title
  • Your Bill of Sale
