Maryland: notifying the DMV after you sell
Maryland doesn't have a sale notice. Returning your plates to the MVA is what ends your insurance and registration requirements for the car.
At a glance
- Required? No sale notice. Returning your plates is recommended to release your liability.
- Deadline: None for you
- Form: None (plate return)
- Where to file: Any MVA branch or authorized Tag and Title agent
What to do
- Sign the title over to Plug. A Bill of Sale is recommended (you can use MVA Form VR-181).
- Remove your plates before pickup and return them to the MVA.
- Keep copies of the signed title (front and back), your Bill of Sale and your plate return receipt.
Your license plates
- Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
- Return them to the MVA, or transfer them to another vehicle at an MVA branch or Tag and Title agent.
Keep for your records
- A copy of the signed title (front and back)
- Your Bill of Sale
- Your plate return receipt
