Nevada: notifying the DMV after you sell

Nevada requires you to tell the Nevada DMV when you sell your car. Filing protects you from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.

At a glance

  • Required? Yes, by law
  • Deadline: Within 5 days of the sale
  • Form: Vehicle Resale Notification (through MyDMV)
  • Where to file: Online through Nevada MyDMV

How to file

  1. Log in to Nevada MyDMV and submit a Vehicle Resale Notification. You can also use the DMV's Plate Cancellation and Release of Liability service.
  2. List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
  3. A Nevada Bill of Sale (Form VP 104) is highly recommended. Keep a copy.

Your license plates

  • Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
  • Transfer them to another vehicle within 30 days, surrender them, or cancel them online.

Keep for your records

  • Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
  • A copy of the signed title
  • Your Bill of Sale
