Texas: notifying the DMV after you sell
Texas doesn't require it, but telling the Texas DMV (TxDMV) about your sale is the best way to protect yourself from tickets, tolls or accidents involving the car after it leaves your hands.
At a glance
- Required? Optional, but strongly recommended
- Deadline: Within 30 days of the sale
- Form: Vehicle Transfer Notification (Form VTR-346)
- Where to file: Online at TxDMV.gov/VTN, by mail, or at a regional service center
How to file
- File online at TxDMV.gov/VTN, or fill out Form VTR-346 and mail it or take it to a regional service center.
- List Plug as the buyer. Ask your Plug contact for Plug's name and address.
- Save your confirmation.
Your license plates
- Remove your plates before pickup. They're yours, not the car's.
- Transfer them to your next vehicle.
Keep for your records
- Your filing confirmation or a copy of the form
- A copy of the signed title
- Your Bill of Sale
