Montana: how to sign your title
Your title is what transfers ownership of your car to Plug, so it needs to be signed exactly right. A small mistake can void the title and hold up your sale. Here's how to sign a Montana title.
At a glance
- Where you sign: the front of the title, bottom half
- Notary needed? No
- More than one owner? Every owner listed must sign
- Loan on the car? You'll need a lien release (see below)
Before you sign
- Sign your name exactly as it's printed on the title. Include your middle name or suffix (like Jr.) if the title shows one. If your name has changed since the title was issued, still use the name on the title.
- Use black or blue ink.
- Leave everything for the buyer blank. Plug fills in those sections when we process your title.
How to sign
- Turn to the front of the title. The seller section is in the bottom half.
- Sign on the line labeled Signature of First Owner or Agent of Owner (Transferer).
- Print your name on the line labeled Printed Name - must be the same as signature.
- Leave all buyer and odometer fields blank.

Your title might look a little different from the example. The lines may be in a slightly different spot, but they'll have the same labels.
If more than one owner is listed
- Every owner listed on the front of the title must sign, no matter how the names are joined.
If there's a loan or lienholder on the title
If a bank or lender is listed on your title, the lien has to be released before ownership can transfer. That means one of these:
- The lienholder signs the lien release section of the title, or
- You include a lien release letter from your lender showing the loan is paid in full.
If Plug is paying off your loan, your lender may still have the title. Your Plug contact will tell you what's needed.
Avoid voiding your title
- No white-out, correction tape or highlighter
- No crossing out, writing over or scribbling
- Don't sign in the dealer reassignment section
- Don't tear or laminate the title
Made a mistake? Stop and contact your Plug contact before you try to fix it. Trying to correct it yourself can make the title unusable.
Lost or damaged title?
You can request a duplicate title from the Montana MVD. Let your Plug contact know first so we can help you through it.
Next step: mail your title
Once it's signed, mail your title to Plug. See How to sign and mail your title for where to send it.
